Gallery of original pastels and watercolors

Consuelo Cloos (1887-1985), poet and impressionistic surrealist, was a prolific artist who produced her major artworks in the 1940s and 1950s. She was the widow of Max Pantelieff, who was the director of the Russian Grand Opera Company, which brought Russian opera to the United States of America for the first time in the 1920s. She has also written poems, some of which were set to music by Alan Hovhaness. She has produced some 700 works in various media, mostly oils, pastels, and watercolors. Some of her works have been sparingly displayed in various art galleries since the 1940s, and although she was offered up to $1200.00 for her most important work by a well-known Boston gallery in 1948 (documented), she has refused to sell any of her "children."After having met Salvador Dali in 1976 in New York, Cloos was invited to exhibit some of her works in his gallery in Spain, an act of rare occasion. He described her work as "magnifique." Again, the artist insisted that none of her works be sold. Click HERE to view a photograph of Dali and Cloos.
